Kevin J. Nusz, M.D.

Dr. Kevin Nusz is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in refractive cataract surgery, laser vision correction and oculoplastics.

After graduating Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Biochemistry from SUNY at Buffalo, Dr. Nusz earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He then completed his training in eye surgery at the Mayo Clinic. Prior to joining The Eye & Laser Center, Dr. Nusz was director of a national eye surgery center in New York.

Training at the world’s top medical institutions has given Dr. Nusz unparalleled medical knowledge. Also, he shows great compassion by committing every day he works to doing all he can to help each of his patients see as well as possible.

Dr. Nusz is committed to finding and providing the best and most advanced surgical eye care options to his patients. He was the first surgeon in the Charlotte region, and one of the first in the nation, to implant the Symfony® lens. Today, in less than 2 years, Symfony® has become the most commonly used advanced technology intraocular lenses in the United States.

Dr. Nusz was also the first surgeon to use the CATALYS® cataract surgery laser at The Surgery Center at Edgewater. Other lasers are used for cataract surgery, but the CATALYS® Precision Laser System is the only laser in the Charlotte region designed for cataract surgery, providing patients a gentle, accurate customized treatment.

Completing thousands of successful vision enhancing surgeries, Dr. Nusz has been a surgeon at The Eye & Laser Center since 2007. Dr. Nusz stays current in his practice by being an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, South Carolina Medical Associations, and the South Carolina Society of Ophthalmology.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Nusz enjoys spending time with his family, exercising, and traveling. Dr. Nusz and his family happily reside in Lancaster County, which is where they also attend church.

Brooks Owens, M.D.

BS: Biology and Spanish, Wofford College
MD: Medical University of South Carolina
Residency: University of Virginia

Dr. Owens is a native of Columbia, South Carolina. He attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC where he graduated with Magna Cum Laude with B.S. degrees in Biology and Spanish. He completed medical school at The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He then completed his residency at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA where he served as Chief Resident.

He practices general ophthalmology and has a notable interest in cataract and anterior segment surgery. He has given multiple presentations regarding a variety of topics from neuro-ophthalmology to management of ocular and orbital trauma. He has also authored multiple journal articles and always seeks to stay current on the latest surgical and diagnostic guidelines.

Dr. Owens is married to a Charlotte native and they are excited to return closer to their families. In his free time, he enjoys playing guitar, playing golf and exploring the Carolinas with his wife and dog.

Oscar Kuruvilla, M.D.

Oscar Kuruvilla, M.D., grew up in the Philadelphia area. He attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, where he graduated with honors with B.A. degrees in Biology and Psychology. From there he moved south to Columbus, OH and completed medical school at The Ohio State University. During this time, he completed a course in traditional Chinese medicine in Wenzhou, China. He finished his internship and residency in Ophthalmology at the Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan where he served as Chief Resident.

He completed a fellowship specializing in diseases of the retina at Vanderbilt Eye Institute in Nashville, TN. His areas of interest and specialized training include diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, with additional training in uveitis. In addition, he practices general ophthalmology with a special interest in cataract surgery. He prides himself on his communication skills and the rapport he establishes with his patients.

He has authored scientific papers in the areas of neurodegenerative disease, ocular pharmacology and acquired macular diseases. In addition, he has had numerous presentations at the Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He serves as a board member for the Charlotte Ophthalmology Society.

Dr. Kuruvilla is married and enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He also enjoys football, outdoor activities, cooking and movies.
